Every now and again the need arises to share a file with those on a list serve. Small
files can be sent as an attachment. Please note, though, that larger files will
cause the post to bounce because of the size limitations on posts. This size limitation
is there because all files are automatically archived. Archived material sits on
the Lsoft servers and we are charged a rental for the space taken by this material.
Large attached files (and some word processor files, for example, can be much larger
than you might expect) quickly fill up the rental space and increase the amount billed
for storage.
If you need to make a file available and it gets bounced back to you on account of
the size limitation, there are three ways around this.
- If it is a word processor file, you might consider copying the text and pasting directly
into the body of your email. Pasted text takes a lot less space, generally.
- You can mention in your email posting that you have a file to share, and invite those
who wish to receive this file to email you privately. You can then simply mail your
file privately to those who request it.
- If the file is of general interest and something that you think people might wish
to access again later on, email the webmaster to have your file uploaded to the clergy
website. After it is uploaded all you need to do is send out the link to that file
so that anyone can access it at any time.
It might be an inconvenience not to be able to attach large files to list serve postings,
but it is necessary because the lists are archived. Hopefully the convenience of
being able to search archives online outweighs the inconvenience of not being able
to post large attachments. And, if you choose option 3 above, there is the added
advantage of making the file permanently available in the clergy online library.
